New Syllabus: SSC CGL Exam Pattern and Syllabus
The SSC CGL (Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level) examination is a popular exam performed via the Staff Selection Commission for recruitment to diverse Group B and Group C posts in ministries, departments, and groups of the Government of India.
SSC CGL Exam Pattern
The SSC CGL exam consists of four stages:
- 1. Tier-I: Preliminary Examination
- 2. Tier-II: Main Examination
- 3. Tier-III: Descriptive Paper
- 4. Tier-IV: Skill Test/Computer Proficiency Test (CPT)/Document Verification
Preliminary Examination
This is an online computer-based examination.
The exam is objective type with multiple-choice questions.
It consists of four sections: Subject | No. of Q. | MM | Time
- I. Quantitative Ability | 100 | 200 | 2 hours
- II. English Language and Comprehension 200 200 2 hours
- III. Statistics 100 200 2 hours
- IV. General Studies 100 200 2 hours
Each section has 25 questions, and each question carries 2 marks.
Total marks: 200
Total time: 60 minutes (80 minutes for visually handicapped/cerebral palsy candidates)
There is a negative marking of 0.50 marks for each wrong answer.
Main Examination
Also an online computer-based test.
It consists of four papers:
- Paper-I: Quantitative Abilities
- Paper-II: English Language & Comprehension
- Paper-III: Statistics (only for candidates who apply for the Statistical Investigator Grade-II & Compiler posts)
- Paper-IV: General Studies (Finance & Economics) (only for candidates who apply for Assistant Audit Officer in C&AG posts)
Each paper has 100 questions, and each question carries 2 marks.
Total marks for each paper: 200
Time duration: 2 hours for each paper (2 hours 40 minutes for visually handicapped/cerebral palsy candidates)
There is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for Paper-II and 0.50 marks for Paper-I, Paper-III, and Paper-IV.
Descriptive Paper
- This is a pen and paper mode of examination.
- It is a descriptive paper in English or Hindi (writing of essays, precise, letter writing, application writing, etc.).
- Total marks: 100
- Time duration: 1 hour (1 hour 20 minutes for visually handicapped/cerebral palsy candidates)
- The paper is offline and subjective in nature.
Skill Test/Computer Proficiency Test (CPT)/Document Verification
This tier is applicable to certain posts.
Skill Test is for Data Entry Operators inside the Office of Comptroller and Auditor General of India (C and AG) and for Lower Division Clerk/Junior Secretariat Assistant in various Ministries/ Departments/Offices of the Government of India.
Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) is for Assistant Section Officer in CSS and MEA.
Document Verification is for all other posts in SSC CGL Exam.
